OK, the weather person starts 5 days out to tell you, in a most alarming way, "Snow will be heading our way, do you have the milk and bread you need...it's huge, it's really huge....more details after these messages." After some 14 minutes of waiting for the details, I simply change the channel. One, I know they aren't quite sure what the hell is going on with the weather, but two, I cannot, will not, sit through the commercials, only to be disappointed, yet again.
I can be disappointed any day of the week, I don't need it from virtual strangers. OK, we see them everyday and feel like me MUST know them, but in fact, we do not and they will probably lie to you...right on camera. It's a journalism fact of life. Let's face it, we all, even as adults, love the fact a little bad weather could indeed, keep us from our daily grind. Yes, it's only one day, but, God, does it feel good...a little mental health day coming your way. Kids love it, adults love it, it's just a good thing. All of us at one point or another, love a "free" day off, without retribution.
Now, the downside to all of this anticipation is this. Odds are, this weather curse comes on Thursday nights or Sunday nights...thus, creating a horrible decision factor which ultimately spoils the old "free" day off.
Here's the scenario: Thursday night, arrive at home with the possibility of a slight snow shower. Could be just enough to warrant the next day, Friday, off...thus, creating the loving three-day weekend. Nature has a really crappie way of not delivering these promises. You wake with a start at 3:40AM, rush to the window, already wide-eyed, only to see NOTHING....no rain, no sleet, no frozen precipitation, zip, nada...crap!
Mother Nature has just let you down again, not to speak of the local, believable meteorologists on your beloved channel for news. They lied, plain and simple. If I had their telephone number, I would call them, then and there.....and give them what for. There...take that.
The next worse scenario is awaking with a start at 4:57AM, only 30 more minutes anyway. There is snow, there is a bit of ice (dangerous stuff, cannot possibly drive in that), there is a high possibility you won't have to trudge in. But wait, Mother Nature sweeps in again and guess what, 7:27AM and the temps have risen to 65 and not a cloud in the sky...what the?
The worst is snow covered lawns, cars, driveways (mine's extremely steep...helps with trying to get out, if you get my snow drift).....then everyone in the office calls each other for the next 2 hours...do we go, do we not? What are you going to do....no, I asked you first what are you going to do? It is endless, it is not fruitful, everyone is wide-awake...what is the point???? It is a great source of disappointment..........Until.........
Yes, the moment has arrived. I am currently watching the most beautiful snow I have seen in some time. We don't get snow around these parts, so when we do, it is special. Work or not, I love to see it and hear it. As much as it is quiet, I can hear it fall and love it's stillness.......even if I have to work tomorrow, who cares, I made it to another beautiful, snowy evening and for that, I am happy. It really doesn't take much for me. I am glad.
